Prior to becoming an attorney, Mr. Veile was a police officer and sergeant with the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department for seven years. Mr. Veile is certified as a Police Instructor by the Tennessee Peace Officer Standards and Training Commission and was Law Instructor at the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department Training Academy, where he taught Criminal Statutory Law, Criminal Procedure, and Constitutional Law.
Mr. Veile serves as a leader in several professional organizations. In April of 2015, he was reelected as a Middle Tennessee Governor for the Tennessee Bar Association and currently serves on the TBA Board of Governors. He also serves as the Chair of the statewide Tennessee Bar Association Criminal Justice Section. Most recently, he was elected to serve a three year term as a Governor on the Board of Governors of the Tennessee Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers.
After graduating third in his law school class and being admitted to the bar, Mr. Veile began a general practice with an emphasis on litigation. Due to his experience in the criminal court system, Mr. Veile’s practice has evolved and now focuses primarily on criminal defense. He has assisted clients facing charges ranging from traffic citations to first degree murder. Due to his background and training in the administration and interpretation of standardized field sobriety tasks in accordance with the standards developed by the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration, Mr. Veile has valuable insight on how to approach the defense of a DUI charge. Mr. Veile has also served as a special prosecutor and special judge.

The Williamson County Bar Association recently released a poll of its members rating the three nominees State Gov. Bill Haslam is considering for appointment to the 21st Judicial District Circuit Court…Veile, a Franklin attorney was rated “superior” by the majority of respondents in all categories. He was given “superior” ratings by 56.25 percent of respondents for his ethics and by 57.81 percent for his respect for other attorneys.

But the alleged victim isn’t a typical witness — and has special rights — said David Veile, a Franklin criminal defense attorney and continuing legal education instructor.
Veile said victims are exempt from witness sequestration by the state constitution, which lays out victims’ rights.
“If I were defense counsel, I certainly would want to know if the victim was there to listen,” Veile said.

“Intoxication is generally not a defense to prosecution of a crime, particularly when the defendant was ‘voluntarily’ intoxicated,” said David Veile, a Franklin criminal defense attorney and continuing legal education instructor.
Veile said intoxication wouldn’t help Vandenburg clear himself of recklessness, which is one of several factors in prosecuting aggravated rape.
“(Defendants) cannot later claim that they were ‘so drunk’ that they were unaware of a substantial risk,” he said.
Judges Scramble To Fix Errors That Could Clear Convicts

WILLIAMSON COUNTY, Tenn. – “There is concern in Williamson County over a snafu involving criminal warrants that could lead to the release of convicts.
There are clear guidelines for those who violate their probation. In those cases, general sessions judges are required to sign the criminal warrants for further punishment which could include a return to jail.
However, attorney David Veile said that didn’t happen with one of his clients and he filed a motion to have the probation violation dismissed.
“I determined that it had become practice that probation violation warrants were being signed by someone other than the judge,” said Veile. “
